“WHEN I’M GONE”

When I come to the end of my Journey and I travel my last weary mile,
just forget if you can, that I ever frowned and remember only the smile.

Forget unkind words I have spoken; remember some good I have done,
forget that I ever had heartache and remember I’ve had loads of fun.

Forget that I’ve stumbled and blundered and sometimes fell by the way.
Remember I have fought some hard battles and won, ere the close of the day,

then forget to grieve for my going, I would not have you sad for a day
but in summer just gather some flowers and remember the place where I lay,

and come in the evening when the sun paints the sky in the west
stand for a few moments beside me and remember only my best.

I can’t except your not here–
I still feel your love and know your near.

Time seems to have stopped and my world has come to an end–
you are not only my father but my friend.

We already made plains for fishing in the spring and the poles, you’d restring.
I’ll pickup worms at “Big R” and get you a box of “March Wheeling” cigars.
We’d fish till dark, be hungry and sweaty, knowing when we got back Mom would get supper ready.

Even when we didn’t “CATCH” anything,
we’d have a blast–listening to the birds sing and looking for animal tracks.

I’m so proud to be your daughter,
you taught me so much–your work ethics, respect and such.

As I look out at what your eyes last saw–
I hope you heard a “wip–a–will” singing her song.
Nothing seems to matter as it once did,
my eyes have a blankness, my mind seems to spin.

I think about my future and what it might hold
wishing you were here to shake off the cold.
I’ll take care of mommy as you would want me to do
but no one can ever do it as loving as you.

I'm consumed with sadness, you wouldn’t want me this way–
wondering if I can face another day!!
I don’t want to say goodbye to you ever you know if only,
if only I could have made your heart whole

I love you with all my heart, knowing we will not always be apart.
As the sun will shine on you in the west, remember always YOUR THE BEST.
